Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh: Disrupting Israel-Arab Nations Normalization Through Political Islam and Quranic Principles

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has made his position clear. Inserting verses from the Koran and quotes related to political Islam, Haniyeh highlighted the fundamental objective of the attack initiated by his organization: to interrupt the process of normalizing relations between Israel and the Arab nations.

Recently, it became apparent that Saudi Arabia was among the next countries to establish diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv. For a movement that defines itself as “Islamic”, such normalization, with all its religious implications, represents a heavy blow, difficult to accept for radical Islamism, reports Rai News quoted by Rador Radio Romania.

Saudi Arabia, a reference point for all Muslims who head to Mecca to pray five times a day and the birthplace of Islam, holds undisputed leadership in the Sunni world.

For Islamists Hamas, Riyadh’s decision to recognize Israel is a significantly damaging blow to a movement that has never hidden its main goal: to wipe the state of Israel off the map. Haniyeh reiterated this concept several times in his speech on Saturday.

The Hamas leader also emphasized Israel’s vulnerability. According to Haniyeh, his move showed Tel Aviv to be particularly fragile, sending a strong message to those who believed they could rely on Israel as an ally to stop Iranian expansion.

Iran, a mainstay for Shiites and a model for political Islam-related movements that have their origins in Egypt in 1928 with the Muslim Brotherhood, has seen Hamas as an ally since the latter’s birth.

The alliance between Hamas and Tehran is part of a worldview that transcends the differences between Sunnis and Shiites, giving life to a political perspective in which the concept of the Umma (Islamic nation) takes shape and in which time and space become irrelevant. The cardinal points of this vision are rooted in an idealized perception of the Islamic religion as an archetype of life, an Islam conceived in which conspiracy and victimization help preserve power.

Saturday’s attack by Hamas essentially wanted to send a message to the Arab and Islamic world: to provoke a reaction in Arab countries that have decided to establish diplomatic relations with Israel and to discourage others from following the path of normalizing relations with Tel Aviv . All this, immersed in the logic of those who never adopted, nor ever wanted, a strategy to consolidate peace in a region marked by prolonged instability. No strategy and above all no will.
