Hackers joined forces to fight for a greener planet. The result is a mobile application

Although the entire hackathon took place online, the ceremony took place at the H40 in the Prague Market Square. Here, a jury of experts and partners selected Re-pair + Re-use + Re-sell as the best project.

He deserved the first place because he solves three problems at once – they all concern furniture. The application is used for easy repair, secondary use and sale of used furniture.

The next life of furniture

“Our application allows you to use a QR code to identify IKEA furniture, and the customer can then simply order or have the missing spare parts produced, draw ideas for improving the furniture or sell unnecessary furniture. We naturally want to teach customers to behave in an environmentally responsible way, inspire them to repair furniture and motivate them to extend its durability, “described the new application Tobiáš Vybíral from the winning team of Unicorn Hackers.

Second place went to the BASF in your pocket project of the Best_BASF_app team, which came up with a universal solution for labeling chemical compounds. The third and fourth place was shared by the Nature Catcher – Vysočina application of the SUDs team, which solves the problem of illegal landfills and helps increase the number of tourists in the Vysočina Region, and the Second Life for bottles project of the Balance is Motion team. He came up with designs for advertising materials and blocks from beer bottles.

“I am pleased to have organized the largest innovation event on sustainability in Europe as part of this year’s European Green Week. I am excited about the number and quality of ideas that were born in just 36 hours, and I am very much looking forward to seeing some of them work in practice, “said Tomáš Studeník from Ceehacks, which organizes the hackathon.

11 challenges

As part of this year’s event, the organizers prepared a total of 11 calls related to the European Green Week. Specifically, the topics were: can recycling, energy saving in buildings, second life non-returnable bottles, sustainable gift packaging, longer furniture life, recycling of containers with hazardous substances, carbon neutral construction, heat regulation in public buildings, CO2 monitoring in schools, transmission operator systems of the future and a platform for monitoring natural resources.

The event was attended by 200 hackers from different parts of Europe. At the same time, individual teams could choose what they wanted to do specifically.

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a one-day or two-day event on which a group of programmers, designers or other experts build a prototype solution to a specific problem.

These are so-called white, ethical hackers who use their abilities for the good of others. The theme of hackathons is usually the challenges of modern times, such as health, transport, energy or life in cities. Participants are assisted in their work by expert mentors, data from the public and private spheres, pizza, energy drinks and fast internet.
