Hacker Steals Private Data from Redlights.be: 415,000 Users Affected in Data Breach

Oct 8, 2023 at 2:33 PM Update: 21 minutes ago

A hacker has stolen private data from tens of thousands of accounts on the website Redlights.be. Sex workers offer their services on this Belgian site. Redlights also has a site specifically aimed at the Dutch market. The data breach was closed shortly after its discovery, according to a message on the site.

The still unknown hacker has obtained data from 415,000 users of the site, both visitors and sex workers who place their advertisements there. Most of this concerns outdated data, but 128,000 accounts are still actively used. It is not known how many of those accounts belong to Dutch people.

Redlights owner Link Media has been in contact with the hacker, but says those conversations have stalled. The cybercriminal would threaten to sell the data to the highest bidder. The company recommends that all visitors and advertisers change their login information and password.

“First of all, we are very sorry for our advertisers and visitors to our website that this could happen. We do everything we can to protect our website against these types of criminal attacks, but the hacker has still found a loophole,” writes Link Media. Interventions and checks by IT experts should ensure that a hack like this cannot occur again, the company adds. A cybercrime unit of the Belgian federal police is trying to track down the hacker.

Link Media says that Redlights websites have extra security. Since February, private data and messages have been additionally encrypted, so that sex workers and visitors who registered afterwards have not been affected by the cyber attack.
