Haaland leads the way as Manchester City triumph over Young Boys in Champions League match

Young Boys – Manchester City 1-3 (0-0)

Haaland scored 3-1 and his second goal of the evening four minutes before the end. And it was quite a goal, because the 23-year-old hammered the ball high into the corner with the “wrong foot”.

World class, said Jesper Mathisen in the TV 2 studio.

– Back to normal. All is well. He was good all evening, kept his position and was calm in important moments and scored goals, Joe Cole said about Haaland to TBT Sports.

– It is important to get chances, people want him to fail. I’m sorry, but this guy is going to score goals all his life, with the chances he creates, he’s an incredible threat, manager Pep Guardiola told TNT Sports about Haaland.

Haaland first got the opportunity from the chalk mark after 67 minutes and sent the ball hard into the goal. That was as far as it would go, because the ball went through the gloves of goalkeeper Racioppi. The goal drought in the Champions League (five games) was over anyway.

– There he probably also felt his heart rate rise, Mathisen said live.

– Not a fantastic penalty, said former England boss Glenn Hoddle in the TNT Sports studio.

Haaland had gone five straight Champions League games (over nine hours) without scoring before tonight. He has never gone so many matches in the tournament without net knowledge before.

The Norwegian now has 37 goals in 33 games in the CL. He has only 19 players ahead of him list over top-scoring players in the tournament.

Frustrated at first

But in the beginning there was a lot of frustration. After 22 minutes, Haaland was completely free, but never received the pass from Rodri. Then the Norwegian threw his arms out in frustration and gave a clear message. Soon after, he missed a chance when the ball went off target, and the attacker hit the grass.

After half an hour, Haaland should perhaps have scored on a volley, but the 23-year-old missed the ball from five to six metres.

City manager Pep Guardiola admitted before the game that he considered giving Haaland a rest. The Spaniard rested, among others, John Stoner, Kyle Walker, Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden.

– Yes, but he is so strong. Everything is so important for us, today we have a mathematical opportunity to qualify and be one step closer to promotion in February, Guardiola told TNT Sports.

Rude lob

Manuel Akanji, who plays for Switzerland, made it 1-0 for the visitors four minutes before City equalised. He scored on a rebound after Ruben Dias poked the ball through the goalkeeper’s gloves and into the crossbar.

The hosts then equalized with a cheeky lob. Meschak Elia was cheeky when he came alone with goalkeeper Ederson. He lobbed the ball in a long arc over the last chance and into the goal. A magnificent score.

So Haaland scored on a penalty kick. Not many minutes later, the Norwegian missed a great chance, before substitute Julian Alvarez thought he made it 3-1 after a pass from Haaland. However, the scoring was checked by VAR, and canceled for a hand on Jack Grealish in front.

A few minutes before the end, Haaland removed all doubt when he thumped in the 3-1 score with his right foot. Now there is no more talk of target drought anymore.

Manchester City will meet neighboring rivals Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday at 16:30.
