Guatemala continues as one of the countries furthest behind in vaccination with 27% of its population inoculated – Prensa Libre

Five million people have received two doses of the anticovid vaccine in Guatemala, that is, 27% of the country’s population, while 1.6 million inhabitants have at least one dose, according to official data released this Thursday.

With a population of around 18 million inhabitants, the vaccination figures leave Guatemala as one of the most lagging countries in the American continent in terms of complete immunization (two doses) of its population, according to official counts.

The latest update from the Ministry of Health Guatemalan points out that almost 12.7 million doses have been supplied since the start of vaccination in February 2021.

The data from the health portfolio highlights that 6.7 million people have been vaccinated against covid-19 in Guatemala, but dand only five million of them have a complete scheme (two doses) of vaccination, including almost 900,000 who also already have a booster dose.

With this, less than 30% of the people in the territory have the complete vaccination schedule, considered transcendental by experts so as not to get seriously ill from the coronavirus.

Specifically, Guatemala has 27% of its population vaccinated with two doses, while a large part of the countries of the Americas exceed 30%, according to data collected by each country.

death and chaos

Guatemala records 16,223 deaths from coronavirus since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, in addition to 662 thousand 828 confirmed positive cases.

The country chaired by Alejandro Giammattei registers an increase in infections since the beginning of this year after the appearance of the omicron variant of covid-19, confirmed this month in Guatemalan territory after sending several tests collected in December to Panama for their respective analysis.
