Grosdidier elected mayor after tighter than expected second round

The former mayor of Woippy, who had been able to rally many supporters between the two rounds, had to wait for the last count to see his victory confirmed. With 45% of the vote, he brings Metz back into the fold of the right despite good resistance from Xavier Bouvet, the candidate on the left.

Winner of the 1st round with more than a thousand votes ahead of Xavier Bouvet, François Grosdidier won the second round by less than 200 votes over his main opponent. It remains the architect of the tilting of Metz to the right, after the 12 years of reign of the socialist Dominique Gros.

The former mayor of Woippy had behind him, in addition to his party The Republicans, several candidates in the first round. Xavier Bouvet, he brought together the left and environmentalists. Finally Françoise Grolet represented the National Rally.

The election night was long in Metz, the only city in Lorraine whose offices closed at 8 p.m. Over the count, the gap between the two main opponents was tighter than expected given the results of the 1st round. The RN candidate, for her part, was soon behind.

Shortly after 10 p.m., Xavier Bouvet, looking serious, recognized his short defeat while denouncing “registers full of irregularities”, a Sybillin formula which opens the way to further challenges. Unknown a year ago, the former collaborator of Dominique Gros had never faced universal suffrage but had managed to federate environmentalists and a good part of the left, despite the divisions of the socialists of Metz.

François Grosdidier, for his part, knew how to use both his weight as a parliamentarian (Senator LR for ten years) and his experience as mayor of Woippy, a large commune in the suburbs of Messina. He managed to siphon RN voices while reassuring the center.

His election especially reminds that Metz is not, historically, a city of the left: Dominique Gros was only elected in 2008 on the divisions of the local right. He then had the intelligence to open his majority largely to the center to manage the city.

Nevertheless, the good resistance of the Bouvet list shows that in Metz as elsewhere, environmental sensitivity is on the rise.
This Sunday’s election is also once again marked by strong abstention, which necessarily puts the value of the results into perspective.
