Groen President during New Year wishes: “There is a majority to make this country work together”

Groen President Meyrem Almaci on Saturday called on the parties to end the worsening of the situation and to form a federal government during a New Years reception.

According to her, the next government must be ambitious on the climatic and social plan. The traditional New Year wishes of the parties are dominated by the formation of the federal government at the start of the year. Seven months after the elections, the president of Groen Meyrem Almaci in turn sent a message to other political parties. “Form a government,” she said. “That’s enough. Nothing can work if you don’t want it to work. You can’t build a house if your main instrument is rotten.”

The president of the environmental party did not mention a name but stressed the absence of a majority to split the country. “There is a majority to make it work together,” she said. “Our politics are plagued by ill will and sensationalism. And people know it.”

Meyrem Almaci also welcomed the European Commission’s Green Deal but added that Belgium is late. “Every day, without a proactive, progressive and green government, we fall further behind.”

Groen pleads among other things for investments in public transport and renewable energies, a climate neutral Belgium in 2050, a minimum pension of 1,500 euros as well as a better balance between work and private life.

Its president also criticized the policy of the Flemish government of Jan Jambon, in particular the savings in culture. “People yearn for more care, security and support, but all they receive is distrust and selfishness.”
