Former Mayor Expresses Disappointment in Police Response
The former mayor of Uvalde, who initiated the investigation into the police response, expressed surprise and disappointment regarding the report’s defense of the officers. Don McLaughlin, who resigned from his mayoral position last year and is now the Republican nominee for a seat in the state Legislature, stated, “What I’ve seen so far, it’s not quite what I was expecting.”
Prolonged Delay and Negligence Under Scrutiny
The disturbing incident that unfolded nearly two years ago has led families to accuse the police of exhibiting a lack of leadership during the critical 77 minutes that transpired between the assailant’s arrival and his confrontation by the authorities.
Further exacerbating the situation, officers reportedly squandered 40 minutes searching for a key to a classroom they believed to be locked, despite it being open. Shocking CCTV footage from the school also revealed an officer diverting his attention by checking his phone, while another nonchalantly applied hand sanitizer, leaving armed police waiting in the corridor.
