Greta Silver: Glowing in old age

Greta Silver is an author, YouTuber, model, successful podcaster – and she is 74 years old. She wants to encourage other people and infect them with her zest for life. Ulrike Bieritz spoke to the Hamburg native about age, self-confidence and beauty.

The conversation is a rerun and was first broadcast on May 17, 2022.

“Growing old is not for wimps” – whoever said this sentence first is controversial. The alleged authors range from Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland to Bette Davis and Mae West. In any case, Greta Silver from Hamburg is clear: “I think life has made you pretty stable anyway and you don’t come across as a wimp in old age.”

“Beauty comes from inner attitude”

The biggest problem with aging is “the images we have in our heads,” says Silver. Recent studies have shown that people experience old age the way they imagine it. “It’s all happening up there in our heads,” explains the author. “There’s so much we can do and leverage that – and that’s exciting.” There is great opportunity in this realization.

In her new book, Silver deals with beauty and beauty ideals. “It’s not a question of smooth skin and wrinkles – but of inner attitude, of radiance and glow,” she says. She didn’t realize that until she was in her late 40s. “If I were bitter, then my appearance would be different and then my charisma would be different.” But of course you can also do something for external beauty and nutrition, admits Silver.

“The reactions are a gift”

With her work on YouTube, as a speaker and author, she primarily addresses people “who tick like me,” says the 74-year-old. At first she didn’t expect that she would reach such a range. “I stumbled into it a bit,” says Silver about the start of her YouTube channel.

“And now this is such an enriching, meaningful activity for me. I can hardly put into words what it means to me,” says the Hamburg native. It’s a gift when she realizes that her publications help other people “live life easier” and deal better with injuries or fear.
