“There are times when you have to go to prison to get to freedom.” The story of Gregoretti and the indictment of Matteo Salvini for kidnapping for having prevented the landing of 130 refugees for four days is grotesque. To illustrate it, the former interior minister borrows the words of Giovannino Guareschi, one of the greatest Italian humorists and caricaturists. The Emilian writer and journalist had at least the satisfaction of being sent to prison by Alcide De Gasperi, a giant, who took full responsibility for his behavior. He believed that Guareschi had defamed him and proceeded against the intellectual. “If I did the jail, he can do it too,” commented the DC statesman on the day of the sentencing sentence.
The League leader is instead persecuted by political dwarves. Premier Conte, who in the identical affair of the patrol boat Diciotti supported his deputy, self-denouncing himself and voting in Parliament against the trial, today wants him to judgment, regardless of the fact that only dictators drag the leader of the opposition to the bar. Like the President of the Council, parliamentarians and grillini ministers behave, complicit in the immigration policy of the League in the last government, having never opposed it, not even in words. On the other hand, the Democratic Party has always criticized the former minister for cases Diciotti and Gregoretti, defining his political action as racist and xenophobic and applauding his indictment. Yesterday, however, he saw in parliamentary committee. He feared that his vote in favor of the trial could damage the DEM candidate in Emilia-Romagna, where the governor is chosen on Sunday.

It is urgent to rewind the tape and clarify something, so as not to lose the orientation overwhelmed by the short circuit in which the left ended. Until yesterday Salvini had never asked to be tried and, when he prevented Gregoretti refugees from disembarking, he was not looking for a judicial martyrdom; he was convinced that he was acting in the interest of Italy and in the fullest of his powers as Minister of the Interior. If we really want to say it all, the leader of the League would gladly spare this judgment, but he knows he cannot avoid it, because the decisive vote to send him to the bar was not yesterday in the commission but will be in February, after the Emilia-Romagna consultation, in Senate room, where M5S and Pd have the majority e they will have no mercy on him.
Yesterday Matteo made harakiri, but in essence he only anticipated what Parliament will decide and which he could not have avoided. The move in the media is not easy to explain, if not with the delusion that surrounds this whole affair, which has never had anything criminal but is exclusively political, and with the fact that the League wanted to remove an argument from the electoral campaign of rivals . Even more grotesque than the trial is that the left now criticizes Salvini because, despite having consented to be tried, he protests innocently and tries to turn a political position that he has taken in line with what he has always been saying on immigration.
REPENT?
If pentastellati and dem have regretted the anti-League campaign on illegal immigrants and think that prosecuting Salvini will prove to be an electoral boomerang, they have only to vote for the acquittal of the League, thus depriving him of that extraordinary advantage that they claim is ending up in the process. Or they might even decide to end them at the bar and check if it is a good way to conquer Emilia-Romagna; the grillini and Conte denouncing themselves as they did with the Diciotti case, the Democratic Party denouncing the minister Lamorgese, Matteo’s successor to the Interior Ministry, for having detained the refugees on board the ship of an NGO for ten days in conjunction with the vote of last October in Umbria. Salvini’s ballet on the incrimination also embarrassed intellectuals very close to the Dems.
On the Corriere della Sera, Paolo Mieli invited Zingaretti and his companions not to hide behind a blade of grass. The Italians are well aware that the Democratic Party is pro immigrants and having skipped the vote on Salvini in committee will not change their opinion on the party. Ilvo Diamonds on Repubblica he was even heavier, inviting the party to dissolve, given that by deserting the decision on Gregoretti he renounced his values. The only one without a doubt is the usual Gad Lerner, who accuses the League secretary of victimization, because it is not said that he will be sentenced, given that the extremes of the crime are smoky. We agree, but what is the point of trying it? Just one, check it politically. Legitimate, even if incorrect, but the right to defend politically and with votes in addition to the Chamber cannot be denied.
