Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Many problems related to the fight against Ebola are related to the ongoing armed conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fighting, targeted attacks and mistrust associated with the conflict hamper important measures such as vaccinations, contact tracking, epidemiological surveillance, health education and ensuring safe burials for Ebola victims.

Distrust of authorities and helpers in combating Ebola also means that Ebola patients arrive late at treatment centers – on average five days after the first symptoms appear – their chances of survival are reduced and there is more time to infect others with Ebola ,

On top of that, the Ebola epidemic is weakening the already overloaded healthcare system, which is facing several crises at the same time. A measles epidemic has cost more in the DR Congo since January 2019, with more than 288,000 sufferers and 5,700 deaths than Ebola. It is therefore of paramount importance to ensure that health centers continue to function during the Ebola epidemic.
