Greenpeace wants to reverse KLM through court state aid

Greenpeace goes to court to have state aid to KLM reversed. According to the environmental organization, the extra money that the state is spending because of the corona crisis is bad for the climate.

“This state aid plunges us deeper into the climate crisis and that is contrary to the duty of care that the Dutch government has for its citizens,” said spokesman Dewi Zloch. She thereby refers to the Urgenda judgment of the Supreme Court, which obliges the government to limit CO2 emissions.

The Dutch government gives KLM EUR 3.4 billion in aid to absorb the blow of the pandemic, because the aviation company is crucial to the Dutch economy. In return, pay sacrifices are required, a cost-reducing reorganization and fewer night flights.

‘Cancel short flights’

Greenpeace also wants the government to impose a limit on KLM’s CO2 emissions, which is reduced annually. Only in this way is the company forced to become more sustainable, is the reasoning.

According to Greenpeace, environmentally friendly innovations do not deliver enough and short-haul flights within Europe will have to be canceled. “There is really no need to fly multiple planes to Brussels or Paris every day.”

The government has until October 1 to respond to the demands.
