The organization’s activists are famous for their often radical ways of drawing attention to environmental problems around the world. In anticipation of the organisation’s half-century anniversary, Greenpeace’s management said there was no room for a big celebration, as the world had to deal with the climate crisis.

Greenpeace’s birthday is set for September 15, 1971, when a small group of environmental activists aboard the ship Greenpeace tried to stop a US nuclear test in the Pacific archipelago in the Aleutian Islands.

They failed, but later Greenpeace’s activities have been a success.

The environmental organization is proud to have helped achieve a moratorium on commercial whaling, stop unregulated dumping of hazardous waste, and protect Antarctica.

Greenpeace chief Jennifer Morgan called on world leaders to agree on ambitious goals to fight climate change at the October climate summit in Glasgow.
