“Green light to the mix, the doses will be enough” – Corriere.it

He uses the words of the national anthem, General Francesco Figliuolo, to urge the citizens – but the request also seems to be addressed to the presidents of the Region – to “not be confused”, to “remain united and huddle together”. In short, to continue to be vaccinated and vaccinated. The goal of immunizing 80 percent of Italians by the end of September is still within reach.

54 million doses by September

«By September, over 54 million doses will arrive – summarizes Figliuolo – I had taken leeway in agreement with Draghi. We will be able to cover 80 percent of the vaccinable audience by that date, as required by the plan which is sustainable ». The regional presidents are now all truly aligned. Of course, the president of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, calls for an opinion from the EMA on heterologous vaccination, and asks that science speak “with a unanimous voice”. Massimiliano Fedriga, president of Friuli and of the Conference of Regions, uses more or less the same words and claims in the name of the category, an end to the “confusion about the AstraZeneca vaccine” for which “the Regions are certainly not responsible”.

The reverse of De Luca

And Vincenzo De Luca yields to heterologous vaccination for the over 60 also in Campania. But he does not renounce to an intemate, as usual, via social media: «We hope that the events of the last few days will convince everyone of the need to put an end to the communication chaos on vaccines. It is essential to speak with one voice ». The most abrupt invitation is directed to Figiuolo: “Cease the daily communications of the commissioner” that De Luca would like “brought back to a silent logistic function”. However, the general concerns are not (anymore) so much of scientific merit.

The logistic node

While a note from the Spallanzani institute in Rome announces the start of a study on efficacy and on mix safety and recalls the “encouraging results” collected in other countries, the focus of concern is logistical: sufficient doses of Pfizer and Moderna will arrive to ensure both the continuation of the drum-beating vaccination even for the youngest, and the recall of the 930,000 under 60s who received their first dose of AstraZeneca? Figliuolo is sure so, even if he admits ongoing evaluations. «The incoming doses are sufficient, we have not asked for new doses of mRna vaccines, but we are studying. Additional doses are welcome, should they arrive ».

Balancing in 11 regions with reserve doses

The regions that may need it are those that have a younger population, such as Campania which in fact asks for it, or that have administered more doses of AstraZeneca to young people with open days, such as Lazio. For the national secretary of general practitioners, Silvestro Scotti, between June and July there is a risk of the perfect storm: maximum supply of AstraZeneca (the plan foresees a high number of incoming doses) against the maximum demand of Pfizer or Moderna (the recalls of under 60). “We are balancing the doses, with strategic reserves, in 11 regions”, replies the commissioner. Among the benefited from the remodeling is Basilicata: it will receive almost six thousand doses of Pfizer more. From Tuscany to Puglia, from Calabria to Liguria, they guarantee that they can stay on time if they receive the required doses. Fontana expects no more than “a delay of a few weeks”.

The bulletin

The general tone is that desired by the Commissioner: we move forward united. Moreover i data on the infection they are reassuring: despite the 63 deaths, 27 more than the day before, with 1,255 new cases, the positivity rate drops to 0.6%. It is the lowest ever recorded.
