Grandmother’s Inspiring Journey: Overcoming Memory Loss and Surviving a Brain Tumor

Jakarta

A grandmother named Glenn Lilley (71) from Plymouth, England told a story one morning in 2021. When he woke up from his sleep, he admitted that he was much younger than his actual age at that time, 69 years.

He felt that he lost his 28 years and turned into 41 years. Even then he also believed that his adult children were still teenagers.

The memory loss overnight finally revealed the tumor symptoms that had been overlooked. He was diagnosed with a meningioma, or a tumor that forms in the meninges, the three layers of tissue that protect the brain and spinal cord.

Long before that, in 2017 Glenn had suffered from tinnitus and vertigo. When examining the ENT doctor, the medical staff said there was nothing wrong with Glenn’s body.

But after the incident, he collapsed at home and caused him to experience temporary memory loss. An MRI scan was eventually performed and revealed a large mass the size of a grape in Glenn’s brain.

The hospital then advised Glenn to immediately perform surgery. If you don’t do the operation immediately, Glenn is predicted to die in the next few months.

“I thought I was 41 years old, not 69 years old which was my real age then. I had lost years of my life and thought my children were still teenagers,” he was quoted as saying by Metro, Thursday (10/8/2023 ).

The doctor said the mass could actually be seen on a scan from 2017. He said the ENT doctor probably didn’t see it.

Glenn’s surgery was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The team of doctors then gave him steroids to reduce the pressure on his brain.

In September, he finally underwent an 11-hour surgical procedure. The team of doctors had told Glenn that this condition could reappear.

“While there is a possibility of a return, if that happens I will be doing radiotherapy because further surgery could leave me with injuries that could be life-changing,” he said.

“I’m happy with what happened to me. In 2017 the tumor didn’t immediately threaten my life and I don’t want to spend the last four years knowing my disease and being judged badly,” he concluded.

Glenn is now actively campaigning to raise awareness regarding brain tumors.
