Grandmother of a girl who fell on a cruise would plead guilty to negligent homicide

The grandmother of the almost two-year-old girl who fell from an 11th floor on a cruise ship anchored at the San Juan pier would plead guilty to the charge of negligent manslaughter under an agreement with the prosecution that will release him from the possibility of serving a prison sentence, according to US media.

The tentative agreement also allows Salvatore Anello not to have to admit the facts and to be able to comply with a probation in Indiana, his state of residence.

The motion for change of claim submitted by the legal representation of Anello in Puerto Rico, José G. Pérez Ortiz, suggests that the hearing be held between March 18 and 20.

Yesterday, during a hearing at the San Juan Court, Anello rejected a jury trial, while his lawyer indicated that they would not use an expert to rebuild the scene.

The beginning of the trial was scheduled for April 2, 3 and 6.

Chloe Wiegand died as she fell from the arms of her grandmother, who lifted her to the window of the 11th floor of the Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas crossing while the ship docked at the Pan American Pier. Anello has maintained his version that he thought the sale was closed.

The girl’s parents sued Royal Caribbean on December 11 for alleged negligence by leaving the cruise window open. The cruise line responded by claiming that the videos of the ship’s security cameras show that Anello is the “only one responsible” for Chloe’s death.
