Grain truck overturns – driver trapped

The police speak of a “debris field”: A grain truck overturned on the highway, the driver was trapped. The route is still closed on Wednesday.

The Autobahn 61 near Nettetal on the Dutch border is still closed in the direction of Mönchengladbach after a serious truck accident. In the direction of Mönchengladbach from the Netherlands, traffic will be diverted immediately after the border via the Nettetal-West exit, the highway police said on Wednesday morning. Only the lane in the direction of the Netherlands has so far been reopened.

On Tuesday morning, a truck loaded with grain drove into the central barrier at this point, broke through it and overturned. Police say the cause may have been a blown front left tire.

Accident on the A61: Grain mixed with rain overnight

The 52-year-old driver was trapped in the cab and suffered life-threatening injuries. A rescue helicopter was deployed.

The Düsseldorf police spoke of a “large field of debris” and had initially announced that the rescue and clean-up work would probably last until Tuesday evening and by then “significant traffic disruptions” were to be expected.

Now it was said that the grain had mixed with rain and diesel overnight. The clean-up work would therefore continue. The highway police could not say on Wednesday morning when the blockage will be lifted. It may take the whole day, they said.

Nettetal is about 30 kilometers north-west of Düsseldorf as the crow flies.
