New York. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has lifted the state of emergency that was imposed in the state in March 2020 because of the corona pandemic. From Thursday, the state of emergency will be over, Cuomo said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Fighting the pandemic and vaccinating the population are still priorities, but the “exceptional chapter of this fight” is over, the governor announced via Twitter. At the same time he warned against the spread of the Delta variant.

Critics had long been calling for it to be repealed

The declaration of the state of emergency had given Cuomo the power to defy local and state laws and regulations and to rule by ordinance. The governor’s critics had long warned that it was time to lift the state of emergency.

About a week ago, Cuomo lifted almost all of the remaining corona restrictions in the east coast state after more than 70 percent of adults had received at least one dose of vaccine against the virus.

New York had become the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States last spring. The infection process is now largely under control.
