Google Announces Renaming of AI Chatbot Bard to Gemini and Launch of Ultra Model to Compete with ChatGPT GPT-4

Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Bard is being renamed to the latest AI model ‘Gemini’. In addition, Gemini’s top model ‘Ultra’ was released and entered competition with ChatGPT’s GPT-4.

Google announced plans to expand the Gemini ecosystem on its blog on the 8th (local time). Gemini, released in December last year, is a multimodal-based AI model that generates not only text but also images, voices, and videos. Depending on the scale of learning, it is divided into Ultra, Pro, and Nano.

Google first announced that it would unify the names of all of its AI products into ‘Gemini’. Accordingly, Google’s AI chatbot, previously called Bard, will be changed to ‘Gemini’. In addition, the name of ‘Duet AI’, an AI function installed in Workspace, a collection of Google collaboration software such as Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides, will be changed to Gemini. Google explained, “(The name integration) has been expanded to refer to the ecosystem of AI-related products and services,” and added, “It is intended to highlight Gemini’s core function of multimodal beyond simply the model name.”

Along with this, Google also released Ultra, the top model of Gemini, on this day. Ultra is a model that Google announced in December of last year that it recorded a 90% correct answer rate in Massive Multi-Task Language Understanding (MMLU), which evaluates knowledge and problem-solving skills using about 50 topics including mathematics, physics, and history. Google explained that it is the first model to exceed OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-4 (86.4%), as well as the human expert score (89.8%).

On this day, Google launched the AI chatbot ‘Gemini Advanced’ equipped with Ultra 1.0, the first version. This multi-modal chatbot is equipped with coding, advanced reasoning, understanding, and creation functions. Google explained that this chatbot can be a personal teacher tailored to your learning style, as well as a creative partner that helps you develop content strategies or business plans.

This chatbot can be used starting today for $19.99 per month through the ‘Google One AI Premium Plan’, a subscription service that includes additional features such as Google Photos, Meet (video conference call), and Drive (cloud service). This will compete with ChatGPT Plus, OpenAI’s $20 monthly paid subscription service based on GPT-4. Starting today, this chatbot will be available in English in over 150 countries, including the United States and Korea, and the languages available will soon be expanded.

Google also launched a dedicated app that allows you to easily use Gemini on smartphones such as Android phones and iPhones. The app will first be released in English in the United States, and will be expanded to more countries, including Korean and Japanese, starting next week. However, the release date has not been set in Europe due to regulatory issues.
