Golden Dawn-prominent Ioannis Lagos may be extradited to Greece

The extreme right-wing Greek MEP Ioannis Lagos may be extradited to Greece, a Brussels court has ruled. Lagos was arrested in the Belgian capital at the end of April, shortly after the European Parliament lifted its parliamentary immunity.

He was in October last year with other leaders of the extreme right-wing Golden Dawn party convicted due to membership and managing of a criminal organization. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison, but escaped imprisonment.

48-year-old Lagos, who has been in the European Parliament since 2019, left for Brussels before the sentences were pronounced in Athens. Greece then asked for the waiver of his immunity and extradition.

The other convicted leaders and members of Golden Dawn are in prison, except for convicted former MP Nikos Pappas. He is a fugitive and is wanted by the police.

Lagos has until Monday to appeal the decision of the Brussels court.
