Going One Step Forward, Apple Obtains a Face ID Under Display Technology Patent

JawaPos.com – Apple’s Face ID is one of the most accurate face detection systems in the world. It’s so strong, but it actually makes Apple dizzy to develop the next technology that is more innovative and up to date.

Why is that? This is because for years Apple has still implemented the same notch or bangs design in their line of smartphones. Only in 2022, Apple began to abandon the bangs design and go full screen, although only on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max variants.

The two models apply a pill-shaped design called Dynamic Island for the selfie camera module area and several sensors including the Face ID sensor earlier. So, to use this feature, Apple has to scale the full screen display of its phones. If you can create Face ID technology under the screen, this will be even better for Apple.

According to the latest listing released by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO), Apple has obtained a technical patent for under-display Face ID. This means that future iPhone models may embed the front camera behind the scenes.

Apple’s patent states that various sensors can be embedded under the screen. They include sensors for Touch ID, measuring 3D non-contact motion, pressure sensors, sensors for detecting position, orientation, and motion, health sensors, and more.

Among the sensors under the display, there can also be various optical sensors such as self-mixing sensors and light detection and range (lidar) sensors, humidity sensors, sight tracking sensors and other sensors.

Reported via PatentlyApple, the location of Dynamic Island is also changed in the patent. It uses a series of small transparent windows. Its size and visible position can be moved around the screen, switching different pixels on and off.

Apple says that the commonly used screens on its devices have 13 layers. They reduce light transmission through this area by up to 80 percent. This means that Apple will have to reduce the number of layers containing the sensor area in the future.

If this patent is applied in the near future, this will allow Apple to go one step further. The reason is, so far there have been several Android phones that use a camera under the screen.

For those of you who may be wondering why Apple still doesn’t use such technology, the answer may be obvious. This is because Apple itself has difficulty hiding the camera sensor under the screen and another thing to put a lot of sensors.
