Global health: A cholera epidemic in 8 countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region due to climate change

The Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean bWorld Health Organization A press conference on the occasion of World Health Coverage Day 2022 was held today, Sunday, in Cairo, under the slogan “Building the World We Aspire To: A Healthy Future for All” with the participation of Dr. Mediterranean and Dr. Soraya Dalil, Director of the Special Program for Primary Health Care at the World Health Organization, and Dr. Awad Matarieh, Director of Health Systems and Universal Health Coverage, Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office.

For his part, Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari, regional director for the Eastern Mediterranean, said the organization celebrates Universal Health Coverage Week, which takes place on 12 December every year, and is an annual day for the United Nations, describing it as an element of universal health coverage for a healthy future and ensuring health security. It comes at a critical time due to the Corona virus.

Countries are committed to achieving the Comprehensive Health Coverage Plan, and the progress of universal health coverage aims to achieve health for all. During the Corona pandemic, some comprehensive health services have been disrupted, and priorities have been adopted on October 7 to get comprehensive health coverage this week the organization hosts some officials to achieve the approach to health care and health security, and we hope to join forces to reshape health systems.

For her part, Dr Rana Al-Hajjah, director of program management at the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office, said climate change is one of the major crises we are trying to address. Last month, the Sharm El-Sheikh conference was held, and some countries reported cholera epidemic in some countries, which is a result of weak health systems. There are 8 countries suffering from cholera epidemic in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

He added: We are introducing climate change and its relationship with health in all conferences, which causes floods, and there has been disruption of health systems in Pakistan due to floods, and the World Health Organization has confirmed that Universal Health Coverage Day December 12 is the annual rallying point where advocates raise their voices and share the stories of millions. People still waiting for health, calling on leaders to make smarter investments in health and reminding the world of this, explaining that it is an official day of the United Nations marking the anniversary of the consensus that approved universal health coverage in 2012 as a priority key to international development.

The organization added that this year’s campaign comes at a critical time as countries around the world are rebuilding from the effects of the Corona pandemic while dealing with many other crises such as natural disasters and conflicts, stressing that the count countdown for the high-level meeting on universality starts health coverage to be held in the United Nations General Assembly in 2023 – the final push to mobilize political support and global action towards achieving universal health coverage goals set for 2030.

Together, we can build a world where everyone, everywhere, can get the health care they need without being pushed into poverty and having to pay for it—that’s the goal that makes all others possible.
