Chiara Consonni and Annemiek Van Vleuten celebrate under the very hot sun of Olbia. The 24-year-old from Bergamo from the UAE hits the ninth and final stage of the Women’s Giro d’Italia, beating Marianne Vos: she too had won in the final stage in Padua in 2022. “The dedication is for Marta Bastianelli, who closed her extraordinary career today,” says Consonni, 2021 world champion in the team pursuit on the track. The Dutch Van Vleuten wears her fourth final pink jersey at the age of 40, after the triumphs in 2018, 2019 and 2022: she precedes the French Juliette Labous (Team Dsm), 24 years old, by 3’56” and by 4’23” the 22-year-old Gaia Realini (Lidl-Trek) from Abruzzo, already third in the Vuelta 2022. Fourth is the American Ewers at 5’34”, who beats Erica Magnaldi for the sum of the best placings; eighth Silvia Persico (Uae) at 6 ’59”.

Phenomenal Van Vleuten, at 40, once again pushes the limits of women’s cycling: she is a champion capable of winning 4 Tours (with 16 stages), the 2022 Tour de France, 3 Vueltas (2021, 2022 and 2023), 2 World Championships in line (2019 and 2022) and 2 time trials (2017 and 2018), and then the great classics: 2 Strade Bianche (2019 and 2020), 2 Tours of Flanders (2011 and 2021), 2 Liège-Bastogne-Liège (2019 and 2022). For her, the goal will now be an encore in the Tour de France, which will start on July 23 from Clermont Ferrand to end after 8 stages on July 30 with an individual time trial in Pau.
