Prime Minister Netanyahu and Justice Minister called for crackdown on alleged perpetrators.
Tel Aviv. Reports of the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl by around 30 men in the coastal city of Eilat have caused anger and horror in Israel. The youngster reported to the police last week after the incident in a hotel, Israeli media reported on Thursday.
She was there on vacation with a friend. Together with friends of the friend, the two had drunk alcohol. When the 16-year-old went to the toilet in a hotel room, numerous men were raped. The exact circumstances were still unclear. Several suspects have been arrested. Apparently there are also video recordings of the incident. The news website ynet quoted the lawyer of a suspect with the claim that the youth had “called the men in”.
The police did not comment on Thursday when asked. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the case “harrowing” and a “crime against humanity”. He called for tough action against the alleged perpetrators. Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn said that in view of the testimony it was “unbelievable how low the moral low is”. He called for full support for the victim and very tough steps against the alleged perpetrators.
