Gift from SV Mattersburg: State Councilor Illedits resigns

The reason is not directly the commercial bank scandal, but a gift from SV Mattersburg in the form of a 100 gram gold leaf.

The Burgenland economic councilor Christian Illedits (SPÖ) announced his resignation on Saturday. As chairman of the supervisory board of the Burgenland football academy, SV Mattersburg, whose chairman Martin Pucher was also head of the – now insolvent – commercial bank, gave him a gift for his 60th birthday, “which I shouldn’t have accepted,” said Illedits on Saturday in one personal statement. It is a 100 gram gold leaf with a personal dedication “worth around € 5,400 today”.

According to the 64-year-old, he deposited this gold leaf as a souvenir at home. He never thought of a financial utilization. “An anonymous advertisement has now reminded me of this. Of course, I asked my lawyer to return the gold piece. ”He had to admit that he had made a mistake“ that in my understanding of decency in politics requires consequences. ”That is why he informed Governor Hans Peter Doskozil on Friday evening that he would resign with immediate effect.

In the past few days, the ÖVP, in particular, had tried to attribute a central role to him “in the Commerzialbank criminal case” because he had been responsible for the state government’s auditing association for several months. “I endure this personal underhanding because I know that I have nothing to reproach myself with here.” But against which he will defend himself by all means, attempts are “my family, the state government and my party, the SPÖ Burgenland, to do so political play. ”He was sorry that he had disappointed the confidence of the governor and many voters.

Illedits has been a politician for 40 years. He was mayor of Draßburg (Mattersburg district), SPÖ club chairman in the state parliament and president of the state parliament. He has been a member of the social council since February 2019. After the state election in January 2020, in which the SPÖ had achieved an absolute majority, Illedits also got the economic agendas. It was initially unclear who would succeed him.
