Gianni Infantino’s Controversial Speech on Women’s Football and Gender Equality

Updated 12:24 | Posted 12:06 p.m

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has found himself in a new storm.

During the International Football Association Congress in Sydney, he gave a long speech about women’s football.

“Working on a small presentation to convince men, anyone who’s in?”, answers the Norwegian superstar Ada Hegerberg like a cold boot.

In place during the football World Cup in Australia, Gianni Infantino has created a new storm of critics with his way of formulating himself.

In a speech celebrating the women’s championship, he spoke about gender equality in world football and called on women to take command.

According to Gianni Infantino, women should convince men to make the right decisions.

– Take the right battles. You have the power to make change. You have the power to convince us men what we need to do and what not to do. Just do it. With men and Fifa, you will find open doors. Just open the doors, says Gianni Infantino.

“Not letting us in”

The statement was immediately questioned by activists, the media and the public.

– Gianni Infantino says that women have not knocked on the door of football for over a decade. It is not women who lack initiative, knowledge or ideas. It’s still the men who won’t let us in, says Australian ABC reporter Samantha Lewis on social media.

– The statement is extraordinary. Although we shouldn’t be surprised. We have been at war for decades against this kind of nonsense. So poorly put by Gianni Infantino. “Women, choose your battles” is the new “Women, know your limits”. The man in charge of world football is telling women it’s up to them to tell him and all the other men in charge of world football what they’re doing wrong, says American TV sports personality Jacqui Oatley.

During the men’s World Cup in Qatar in December, Gianni Infantino created a lot of attention with the speech in which he claimed to feel like “Qatari, Arab, African, gay, migrant worker”.
