Gianluigi Buffon to leave Juventus at the end of the season

Gianluigi Buffon, 43, will leave Juventus at the end of the season. The Italian goalkeeper announced it on Tuesday during an interview with BeIn Sports.

Trained in Parma, Buffon has played for Juventus since 2001. He left the club for a season, in 2018-2019, to defend the goals of Paris Saint-Germain, before returning there as an understudy for Wojciech Szczesny.

“My future is clear and mapped out: this year will definitively end this very beautiful and very long experience with Juventus,” said Buffon. “Either I stop playing or if I find a situation that gives me the motivation to play or to have a different life experience, I take it into consideration,” said the goalkeeper.

“I think I gave everything for Juventus. I received everything and it is not possible to do more. We have come to the end of a cycle and it is right that I leave,” added Buffon.

Buffon has a total of 683 appearances with Juventus, in all competitions. His record with Juventus includes ten Italian league titles, five national cups, seven super cups but also a Serie B championship, the keeper having agreed to stay at the club despite the relegation following the scandal of ‘Calciopoli’, which also had deprived the club of two additional titles. And this a few weeks after winning the 2006 World Cup with Italy. His performances at the World Cup earned him a second place in the Ballon d’Or, behind his teammate Fabio Cannavaro. Buffon holds the unbeaten record for a goalkeeper in the Italian league with 973 minutes without conceding a goal. He reached the final of the Champions League three times, in 2003, 2015 and 2017, without ever winning it.

This season, Buffon has played 12 games in all competitions.
