GGD Limburg starts major research into long-term effects of corona

The GGD South Limburg will investigate long-term complaints as a result of the coronavirus, also known as lung covid. About 60,000 Limburgers who have taken a corona test in one of the test streets in the past year will receive an invitation to participate.

The aim of the study is to identify the percentage of participants who continue to have long-term complaints after being infected with the virus. The impact of those complaints is also being investigated. “Prolonged complaints after a corona infection, in which fatigue and shortness of breath are the main focus, are a potential public health problem with a major impact on functioning,” the GGD writes in the announcement.

People who have been in the test line, but were not found to be infected, are also included in the study. In this way, it can be identified which complaints are actually caused by corona and which are not.

Hardest hit province

It was decided to conduct the research in Limburg because the province has been severely affected by the virus, writes 1Limburg. In addition to the GGD, Maastricht University and RIVM are also participating in the study.

It is not the first time that a large-scale study has been conducted into the effects of the corona virus in Limburg. 10,000 Limburgers previously participated in an antibody study. This showed, among other things, that the rapid spread of covid-19 in Limburg during the first wave in 2020 was a result of the busy association life in the province.
