Get to know Ultra-Wideband Technology on the Galaxy S21 Series 5G

Jakarta

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) has recently become a mandatory feature on many flagship phones, including on Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G and Galaxy 21 Ultra 5G. But, what is UWB and what is it used for?

Quoted from Samsung, Sunday (24/1/2021) UWB is a wireless connection that uses radio waves, just like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

But unlike the two types of connections, UWB operates at a very high frequency (bandwidth of 500 MHz) and can be used to capture highly accurate spatial and directional data. The distance that UWB can reach is also wider than Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

UWB works by sending one billion signals per second which are then received by other devices. When the receiving device sends a signal back, its location can be found with great accuracy.

UWB can track your location in real-time. The UWB device can determine whether the object is at rest, moving away or approaching.

UWB was actually first used by Samsung on the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, but its usability has been further improved in Galaxy S21+ 5G and the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G. Apart from smartphones, this technology can also be used in smart watches, smart locks, or tracking devices.

Because it can detect locations with high accuracy, UWB can have many uses. One of them is to find lost items using gadgets such as the Samsung Smart Tag + which has a range of up to 120 meters.

In addition, a cellphone with UWB can also be a house key or a car key for the future. In a real-world scenario, UWB can be used to open the door of a car or house when the phone is close to the door without touching anything.

At the Galaxy Unpacked event last week, Samsung also announced that it has collaborated with car manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Ford and Genesis to ensure their future cars using UWB support Galaxy S21+ 5G and the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G as a digital car key.
