Snapchat is a very popular weird picture messaging app for Android and iPhone that allows people to share pictures and have conversations that disappear after a very short period of time, after which the shared content is gone forever. The spontaneous and transitory nature of the messages has given the app an interesting reputation that you can now enjoy on your desktop, even if you don’t have an official client for Mac or Windows. Instead, Bluestacks (basically an emulator for an Android app) lets you install and run Snapchat on your Mac or PC right now.

Setting this up is almost easy for anyone, and if you already have a Snapchat account, you’ll immediately have your entire friends list available in OS X.

• Get Bluestacks (free) and install it on your Mac by dragging it to the Applications folder
• Launch Bluestacks and click the magnifying glass “Search” button, type “Snapchat” and click Search
• Click the Install button next to Snapchat (the app on the right has a yellow icon with a ghost on it)
• Let BlueStacks browse different Android stores, choose to install Snapchat from the store farthest to the right with the little Android friend icon
• Let Snapchat download and install

• Go back to Bluestacks home screen, click on My Apps and click on Snapchat to open the app
• Or: Click Launchpad, locate Snapchat and launch it from there (OS X 10.8+ only)

At this point, you can enter an existing Snapchat username and sign in or create a new one directly from the app. If you already have a Snapchat account and username, your friends list will appear when you sign in; otherwise, adding friends is easy.

Snapchat works inside Bluestacks and gives you exactly the same app experience as on Android. Sending and reading messages is the same as if the app were on a smartphone, but you’d use a regular keyboard instead, though the camera has poor support and sending images is limited as a result. However, you can still view picture messages sent to you as usual. With full camera support for the best two-way video communication, you’ll probably get a better-named smartphone app for Android or iPhone, but you have to decide.
