The “Highlights of Physics” – one of the largest German science festivals – will not come to Würzburg until autumn 2021, according to a press release. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Physical Society (DPG) and the University of Würzburg are postponing the physics festival originally planned for the 2020 X-ray anniversary year by one year, thereby taking into account their social responsibility and the health of citizens Protect in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since 2001, the “Highlights of Physics” has aimed to literally take physics to the streets and squares so that visitors from all over Germany can find out about future-oriented research in physics. Visitors of all ages should have the opportunity to be fascinated by the top research in physics through a hands-on exhibition, science shows on open-air stages, live experiments to participate in, a children’s theater and a junior laboratory for children from the age of three.
Corresponding to the title, scientists in autumn 2021 will convey the “insight” into worlds of the universe and matter that cannot be grasped in everyday life. The Würzburg marketplace will then be turned into a hands-on laboratory and science center for five days.
But there will still be reason to celebrate this year: The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation has already promised that the student competition “exciting physics” – an integral part of the “Highlights of Physics” for many years – in September 2020 as part of Würzburg Celebration of the X-ray anniversary can take place. Taking into account and adhering to the measures for infection protection, young inventors should then solve and present physical tasks as creatively as possible. There will be more information about this student competition in a few weeks.
