Germany’s first coronavirus case confirmed in Bavaria

The corona virus has now reached Germany. An infection with the new virus has been confirmed in a man from the district of Starnberg near Munich, the Bavarian Ministry of Health said on Tuesday night. In China, however, the disease continued to spread rapidly. 1,700 infections were added in one day, and the number of deaths rose to 106.

The patient in Bavaria was clinically in good condition. “He is under medical supervision and is isolated,” said a ministry spokesman. People who had close contact with the patient would be informed in detail and informed about possible symptoms, hygiene measures and transmission routes. There should be more information at a press conference on Tuesday morning. The ministry spokesman emphasized: “The risk for the Bavarian population to become infected with the new corona virus is currently considered low by the” Task Force Infectious Diseases “of the LGL and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).”

There are currently three suspected cases in Austria, two in Vienna and one in Carinthia. Minister of Health Rudolf Anschober (Greens) said on Monday evening after a meeting of the task force in the Interior Ministry that the arrival of the virus in Europe was “no reason for panic”. Austria “could not be better prepared,” he emphasized.

The Chinese capital Beijing reported the first death on Monday evening. The authorities said it was a 50-year-old man who had been in the metropolis of Wuhan, where the virus originally broke out – probably at an animal market. New figures were released on Tuesday morning. According to this, the number of deaths increased nationwide within a day by 26, the total number of diseases was 4,515. While 700 new infections were counted on Sunday, there were already 1,700 on Monday.

Corona virus in Europe – how big is the danger really?

The Chinese authorities took drastic measures because of the spread. After the province of Hubei, which has been mainly affected, has been practically cut off from the outside world since the weekend, there are also restrictions in Hebei province near Beijing. On Tuesday, all public transport in the city of Tangshan, populated by two million people, was discontinued. In addition, long-distance traffic between Beijing and Hebei province was largely shut down.

The U.S. State Department advised its citizens not to travel to China. Already planned trips should be put to the test again, the ministry said on Monday. China could also impose exit restrictions on US citizens at a later date, the ministry warned.

For the Hubei province and the city of Wuhan, which were particularly affected by the outbreak of the coronavirus, the ministry specifically warned against any travel. Canada also advised its citizens against all trips to the province and gave the reason for imposing massive travel restrictions.

The Austrian Foreign Ministry continues to see a “good security standard” (level 1) for trips to China and only warns of petty crime. On the other hand, it has been advised against traveling to Hubei province since Friday, where there is a “high security risk” (level 3) due to the spread of the corona virus. “It is not advisable to travel unnecessarily,” says the Foreign Ministry’s travel advice.

As reported by the Foreign Office on Monday, there are two Austrians in Hubei. They wanted to return to Austria and would be supported by the embassy in Beijing in their desire to leave the country. The German government, meanwhile, was preparing to evacuate around 90 Germans who are stuck in Wuhan. According to a report by the news magazine “Der Spiegel”, they should be flown out by the Air Force.
