Germany warns controversial Thai king of “immediate consequences” | Royalty

RoyaltyIf King Vajiralongkorn (68) breaks the law in Germany with Thai politics, there will be immediate consequences. Heiko Maas, the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, warned about this during a press conference on Monday.

According to Maas, not only has the Vajiralongkorn living in Bavaria, who lived in Bavaria, been closely monitored in recent weeks, but this has already been done “regularly”. “If there are things that we consider illegal, it has immediate consequences,” said the minister.

At the beginning of this month, Maas already said that Vajiralongkorn cannot perform his royal duties from Germany. “We have made it clear that politics with regard to Thailand cannot be conducted from German soil,” Maas said about the king at the time. “If there are guests in our country who arrange state affairs from our territory, we always want to counteract that.”

Member of Parliament Frithjof Schmidt then asked whether the European Union would suspend diplomatic ties with Thailand, because the Thai regime would undermine democracy by acting from abroad. The German Foreign Minister did not rule out sanctions, although he said that the EU wants to enter into dialogue with the Thai government before any measures are taken.

Constant protest

The minister’s warning comes after continuous protests against Vajiralongkorn, both in Thailand and Germany. Thousands of protesters recently took to the streets of Bangkok to protest against the government and royalty. Police estimate that more than 5,000 people were on the move. “The land belongs to the people, not the king’s,” they cried. In a letter addressed to the palace, the leaders of the protest called for the monarchy to be reformed, to form a new government and to rewrite the constitution.
