The German biotech company BioNTech has obtained permission from the German government to test a possible corona vaccine on humans.
The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, the German Federal Agency for Vaccines and Biomedical Medicines, held Wednesday permission given for the tests.
In the first phase, the vaccine will be tested on two hundred healthy people to understand any side effects. Among other things, it examines how the immune system of healthy people responds to the vaccine.
The vaccine will then be tested on people in risk groups, such as the elderly and people with a medical condition who are not (or have been) infected with the coronavirus.
In Germany, companies must meet strict conditions in order to carry out such tests. For example, the working method must be transparent and only certified medical staff may participate in the development of a vaccine.
Earlier, two biotech companies in China and one in the United States were already allowed to start testing on humans.
