Germany is waiting for up to five months of strict measures and mass vaccinations

Germany plans to set up hundreds of centers across the country in December to prepare for mass coronavirus vaccination, the Welt am Sonntag wrote on Sunday. The country has reported 16,947 new cases of coronavirus infection in the past 24 hours. The death toll from covid-19 has increased by 107. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin reported this today.

The number of infected was lower than the previous day, when the institute reported 22,461 infected. The number of reported cases is usually lower on Sundays, partly because less is tested over the weekend. Last Sunday, 16,017 newly infected people were reported.

According to Altmaier, Germany cannot afford to keep the economy closed and open. According to him, the country should avoid rapid relaxation of measures. “All countries that repealed the measures too soon paid a high price in the form of loss of life,” said the German economy minister.

The Sunday Welt am Sonntag, who refers in his report to the ministries of health of 16 federal states, wrote that the exhibition grounds will play a key role during the mass vaccination. Negotiations with logistics companies regarding the distribution of the vaccine are just beginning.

Health Minister Jens Spahn previously said that Berlin was trying to secure 100 million doses of the vaccine being developed by the German company BioNTech with its American partner Pfizer. According to them, the vaccine will probably be available in the first quarter of next year.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday that health workers and those in need of care, including the staff of nursing homes, would be vaccinated first. She warned that surviving the winter months would be difficult.

In Germany, which has a population of around 83 million, the presence of coronavirus has been confirmed in 790,503 people since the onset of the epidemic, and 12,485 people died after the infection.

The seven-day reproduction number in Germany on Saturday night was 1.05 compared to 0.99 the previous day. The number indicates how many other people the infected person will transmit the infection to. The current figure means that one hundred infected people have infected an average of about 105 more people. If the number is below one for a long time, the infection is considered to be on the wane.

Merkel is scheduled to discuss existing measures against the spread of coronavirus with the Prime Ministers of the individual Länder on Monday. Germany introduced an extensive quarantine closure from Monday 2 November until the end of the month. Pubs, bars, restaurants, theaters and cinemas are closed; schools and shops remained open. A medical expert from the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) and epidemiologist Karl Lauterbach expects the existing measures to be extended.
