Germany Cancels Smart-eID Project Due to Funding Shortage

There is not enough money for digital projects in Germany, that’s a good way to summarize the current situation. Because after a letter that… Daily Mirror the Federal Ministry of the Interior has pulled the plug on Smart-eID.

The pilot project surrounding the mobile phone ID card, which has been running since March 2022, has been discontinued and the test app has already disappeared from the app stores. Testers were already informed about this step in advance. Accordingly, there will be no introduction of mobile phones next year.

Apparently around 30 million euros are missing, which were cut from the project in the wake of the budget crisis. Officially, the Smart eID is just a “convenience function” because the Perso already works online today. However, you have to hold your original ID up to your cell phone. This will remain one of the focuses in the future; the ministry says they want to expand the infrastructure behind the online ID card.
