Germans sue a Dutchman who wanted an enormous gold ho …

The German justice has charged a Dutchman who wanted to steal an enormous, also historically valuable gold treasure of 18.5 kilos in Trier, Germany. The 28-year-old suspect is on remand. He says he is innocent.

The attempted theft from the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier was in October 2019. The investigators tracked down the Dutchman through DNA on a sports bag that had been left at the crime scene. The suspect, together with at least two other people, would have wanted to steal the more than 2,600 gold coins. He was handed over to Germany at the end of last year. It is still unclear who the accomplices are.

The old coins are one of the largest gold treasures in the world from Roman times. The collection of inestimable archaeological value is considered the showpiece of the museum.

The perpetrators entered the complex through scaffolding and a window. However, they failed to open the armored glass display case containing the gold coins. They escaped without loot because the alarm system went off and the police came.
