The duel for the best starting position for the playoffs is on

Before the start of the second half of the season in the women’s 1st Bundesliga tomorrow, January 14th, 2023, it’s time for a half-time summary. At the top of the table is the reigning champion Allianz MTV Stuttgart with 30 out of a possible 33 points, closely followed by the current Supercup winner and this year’s cup finalist SC Potsdam. Both teams have suffered only one defeat so far. In third place is SSC Palmberg Schwerin, the second cup finalist. Felix Koslowski’s team has one defeat more than the leading duo. The leading group is completed by Dresdner SC, who are already nine points behind Stuttgart. In the top game of the coming weekend, the Dresdeners meet the Potsdamers directly, who, despite the most successful first half of the season in the club’s history, have recently become active again on the transfer market. With setter Kim Robitaille (31) and Libera Florien Reesink (24), the second-placed team has two newcomers. In particular, the commitment of another player became necessary after Megan Viggars was no longer available to the team. SPORT1 will broadcast the game live from 7:30 p.m. on free TV, with commentary from Dirk Berscheidt.

Crucial weeks in the fight for playoff participation

In midfield and the associated fight for the coveted playoff spots, things are extremely tight. Just four points separate USC Münster, currently fifth in the table and thus more successful than it has been for years after two seasons without taking part in the playoffs, from VC Wiesbaden, which is currently eighth in the table. After a somewhat bumpy start to the season, the team from the Hessian state capital managed to jump to last place, which entitles them to playoffs, with three 3-0 wins in a row. At the start of the second half of the season, head coach Benedikt Frank’s protégés will meet their direct neighbors Rote Raben Vilsbiburg in a trend-setting duel. Thanks to constant lines, the Roten Raben have not left the playoff places since the start of the season. But the two Thuringian teams VfB Suhl LOTTO Thüringen and Schwarz-Weiß Erfurt in ninth and tenth place also want to have a say in the allocation of the playoff places. In Suhl, after bad luck with injuries in the first half, they are hoping for a lot from the two new signings. Lena Kindermann joined the team in the diagonal position. The left-hander, who is 1.90 meters tall, was trained in the talent factory at SSC Palmberg Schwerin before studying in Jacksonville (USA). The American Jenna Maria Ewert will strengthen the team on the pass position. The 22-year-old is moving to Suhl from Texas University, where she won the national NCAA championships. She follows her older brother Jordan into the Bundesliga, who has been playing extremely successfully for SVG Lüneburg since 2020. With only six points behind in eighth place, NawaRo Straubing is still within striking distance. If the women from Straubing don’t want to miss the boat, they need a home win against the Ladies in Black Aachen on Saturday. The task will be anything but easy, because Aachen is currently in sixth place after strong performances so far.
