German team in the individual review: Except for keeper Trapp, the whole class fails – and Sane gets the “crown”

The German national team is a disgrace in its 0-2 disgrace in Austria. The staff has to put up with heavy criticism, especially on the defensive. Keeper Kevin Trapp alone satisfies the requirements, while Munich’s Leroy Sane added an inglorious crown to the German performance by being sent off.

The team in individual criticism

Kevin Trapp: The number three was allowed to play again in the absence of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Manuel Neuer. Several strong saves. Caught on the wrong foot at 0:1, defeated with a lob at 0:2. – Note: 3

Jonathan Tah: Instead of Henrichs, he moved to the right in the chain and was supposed to bring stability, which didn’t work. Didn’t bother goalscorer Sabitzer before the 0-1. – Note: 4,5

Antonio Rüdiger: Started with a mistake, setting the tone for a long period of poor performance. Left his post empty before the 0-1 score. Duped by Gregoritsch at 0:2. – Note: 5

On the topic: The DFB and its individual talents – commentary on the national team’s disastrous year

Mats Hummels: Fully fit again and promptly in the starting line-up. Took the central role in the defensive three-man formation, but didn’t bring any calm or security. – Note: 4,5

Kai Havertz: Deployed as a hybrid “leftist” for the second time in a row. His defensive header game prevented things from getting worse several times, but he was helpless going forward. Not better when outnumbered in the usual role on the right front. – Note: 5

Ilkay Gundogan: The captain struggled as a leader and organizer, but was never able to take control of the chaotic German game. No initiative forward. – Note: 5

Leon Goretzka: Surprisingly, he was allowed to take over for his Munich colleague Kimmich and also intervened poisonously. Often dropped into the defensive chain, but doesn’t seem to be the ideal Gündogan partner either. – Note: 4

Leroy Sane: Had Tah behind him on the right instead of Henrichs. He didn’t play any more freely. Rare technical errors. Colorless. Frustration foul. Weakened the team with his first expulsion after an assault against Mwene. – Note: 5,5

Julian Brandt: Had a very free role in the attack and often moved from the right to the middle. In counterattacks as a helper at the back right for Tah, but not at home in both worlds. – Note: 5

Serge Gnabry: Was allowed to replace Florian Wirtz, but never found a real partnership with Havertz on the left. Desperately tried it from a distance, this too was harmless. – Note: 5

Niclas Füllkrug: As was now usual under Julian Nagelsmann, he sometimes stayed on the left sideline. This is also why he is rarely in the box, where he has his strengths. Given away in this system. – Note: 4,5

Thomas Müller: Replaced Füllkrug at the start again and acted primarily as an organizer and motivator – but no one reacted. Harmless in his actual function as an attacker. – Note: 4

Benjamin Henrichs: Came outnumbered by Brandt (52nd) and moved to the back left for Havertz. Turned on forward, but didn’t do much. – Note: 4

Joshua Kimmich: Replaced Gündogan (61st), but was unable to consolidate the shaky midfield with the unfamiliar partner Andrich. Missed the late chance to make it 1:2, but prevented the score from being 0:3 in front of the line. – Note: 4

Robert Andrich: The Leverkusen player made his debut when he replaced Goretzka (61′) and introduced himself with a bad pass that almost made it 0-2. – Note: 4

Florian Wirtz: Actually in great form, but similarly ineffective as a joker for Gnabry (61st). – Note: 4

Marvin Ducksch: The Bremen player came in for his second international match in the final phase for Havertz (77th). – without a note
