German scientists: Organ damage often occurs after COVID-19 – Topics in development

IN Every fifth person who has had a coronavirus infection shows late side effects – usually damaged internal organs.

This was found by researchers from the University of Ulm.

“We followed up to 250 patients, 20% of whom had internal organ damage,” said Dominic Bookert, chief physician at COVID-19, which specializes in the lungs, heart and blood vessels.

Myocarditis and shortness of breath

But other patients are not without complaints. No organ damage was found in them, but they usually withstand less stress than before the disease, explains Buckert, reports “Deutsche Welle.”

He says that most patients who visit the hospital are between 40 and 50 years old, mostly men.

“In fact, these people are relatively healthy, they do not have chronic diseases,” said the chief doctor, who added that there were young men around the age of 20 among the patients.

The University Clinic established this clinic in February, which is also a center for consultations with the so-called post COVID syndrome. Doctors who work there mostly encounter inflammation of the heart muscle and the consequences of such inflammation. “Among them are heart failure and heart palpitations,” Bookert said.

“In the case of pulmonary abnormalities, we mostly observe damage to the lung tissue, as a result of which malignant gas exchange occurs.”

The consequence is known to many people who have experienced such diseases: shortness of breath.

Confirmation of what has been known so far

The results obtained in Ulm overlap with the conclusions that other German clinics have made in the study of the late effects of COVID-19, says the chief physician.
