German Minister of Health hopes to be able to introduce mandatory vaccine

Berlin, Apr 2 (EFE) .- The German Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach, expressed this Saturday his confidence that it is possible to introduce compulsory vaccination against covid in Germany, which will be voted on in the Bundestag next Thursday.

“I am still hopeful that it will work,” the Social Democratic minister told the “Deutschlandfunk” radio station, believing that otherwise the pandemic will cause numerous deaths again in the fall.

“Right now about 230 people a day are dying,” Lauterbach wrote on his Twitter account, lamenting that, despite being preventable, “many have gotten used to the death of so many people.”

With this, he replied to the head of the Opposition, the conservative Friedrich Merz, who this Saturday stated on the same social network that if mandatory vaccination was not finally implemented, Germany would be “in good company” and downplayed the measure.

As April 7 approaches, when the lower house of the German Parliament will vote on the different bills presented to legislate the obligation to vaccinate, none of the proposals currently has a sufficient majority to go ahead.

The variant supported by Lauterbach and by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who heads the coalition government of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals, aims to introduce the compulsory vaccine for all adults over 18 years of age.

However, according to the weekly “Der Spiegel”, a greater number of deputies is currently leaning towards another proposal, presented by a group of parliamentarians from the same three parties, which would go through vaccinating only those over 50 years of age.

A faction of the Liberal Party, as well as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) are trying to stop these initiatives and have presented alternative proposals that claim that vaccination remains optional. EFE
