German and British Foreign Ministers Call for Strengthening European Pillar of NATO

“We have talked intensively about how we can strengthen the European pillar of NATO, regardless of who will be on the other side of the Atlantic bridge,” said Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) on Thursday at a meeting with her British colleague David Cameron in Berlin in response to a journalist’s question about a possible re-election of Donald Trump as US President.

Berlin and London agree that the European pillar must become stronger, said Baerbock. This will be one of the important topics at the NATO summit in July in the US capital Washington. The Federal Foreign Minister emphasized that when there is talk of stronger security and defense cooperation between EU states, it is always about cooperation within NATO.

Cameron stressed that European allies should focus on demonstrating unity leading up to the US election, whether they are in the EU or not. “This will make the future president, whoever that is, more inclined to see the strength of the European partnership.” Great Britain left the European Union (EU) with Brexit in 2020. Cameron was British Prime Minister from 2010 to 2016 and also leader of the Conservative Party in Great Britain from 2005 to 2016.

Baerbock and Cameron met for the second German-British Strategic Dialogue, where foreign policy cooperation between the two countries will be discussed in greater depth once a year.
