The media noted that the post of head of government would be candidacy presented the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Kobakhidze. Garibashvili, in turn, will become the head of Dream.

“I don’t hide from you that the political council discussed the possibility of me remaining in office until the summer, until the start of the election campaign, but I decided to make this decision now. It is important that the next prime minister presents his team on time and forms a new government. I wish success to the new prime minister,” Garibashvili said.

The politician pointed to the “internal democracy” operating in the ruling party, “the most obvious manifestation of which is the rotation principle.”

After the victory of the Georgian Dream in the 2012 parliamentary elections, Irakli Garibashvili served as head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. After Bidzina Ivanishvili’s resignation from the post of prime minister, he headed the government in 2013-2015, and again headed the government in February 2021.

Irakli Kobakhidze was the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament. He left office in 2019 after the “night of Gavrilov” – amid mass protests in Tbilisi. In January 2021, he was appointed chairman of the ruling party.

For information: As you know, on October 26 this year in Georgia parliamentary elections are expected.
