“If someone is supposed to (give the status of an EU candidate. – row.), then Georgia is supposed to, and then Ukraine and Moldova. When they say that Ukraine is in a state of war and because of this it should be granted, I apologize if the assignment of status is determined by war, we do not want war,” he said.

Garibashvili believes his country has earned the candidate status by “30 years of struggle to build democracy” and “reforms over the past nine years.”

Georgia refused to impose sanctions against Russia after a large-scale invasion of Ukraine and rejected the accusations of Ukrainian intelligence in aiding the Russian Federation in circumventing sanctions.

In addition, in early June, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on violations of media freedom and the safety of journalists in Georgia, notes Echo of the Caucasus. In it, the MEPs called for the release of Nika Gvaramia, director general of TV Mtavari, and sending the former president of Georgia abroad for treatment. Mikheil Saakashviliand also recommended that the EU authorities impose personal sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili – oligarch and founder of the Georgian Dream, the ruling party of Georgia.

The head of the Georgian Dream, Irakli Kobakhidze, said in response that the European parliamentarians “became victims of fakes”, and such resolutions are “worthless”.

  • According to Politico, The European Commission will recommend providing Ukraine with official status of an EU candidate country.
  • The publication noted that members of the European Commission generally support Moldova, but have less confidence in Georgia, which, according to the commissioners, has shown a noticeable retreat from democracy in recent years.
