Xinhua News Agency, Tbilisi, August 6 (Reporter Li Ming) Georgia’s Ministry of the Interior said on the 6th that the death toll caused by a landslide in the Oni region of the western part of the country rose to 17 on the 3rd, and search and rescue work is still in progress.

The Georgian Ministry of the Interior issued a statement on the same day, saying that rescuers have so far discovered the remains of 17 victims, and more than 200 local people have been transferred to safe areas. According to local media reports, nearly 20 people are still missing in the landslide, and the possibility of a further increase in the death toll cannot be ruled out.

Georgian Minister of Health Zurabi Azarashvili said on the 5th that various government agencies are fully coordinating the rescue, and dozens of heavy equipment are participating in the rescue operation.

The Georgian government has announced that the 7th of this month will be a national day of mourning to commemorate the victims of the landslide accident.
