There is more space in Darmstadt for cyclists and pedestrians. The drivers lose a trace.

More space for pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles – and less for cars. That is the goal of the new planning for Landgraf-Georg-Strasse, specifically the section between Holzstrasse and Teichhausstrasse. As the magistrate decided at its meeting on Wednesday last week, according to its own statements, the inner-city section of the road should be reduced from two to one lane in each direction. As a result, the bike path can be shifted to the road and pedestrians would have more space, the message said. Representative traffic observations would have shown that the traffic volume allows the roadway for the cars to narrow.

There are currently 23 parking spaces for cars and a bike rack for six bicycles along the south side of Landgraf-Georg-Straße. Motorbike parking spaces are not available.

In the future, car parking spaces will be reduced to 13. There are said to be 29 leaning brackets for 58 bicycles and nine motorcycle parking spaces. The installations are planned so that they can be temporarily removed, for example for city festivals.

According to the information, the costs amount to around 92,000 euros. Funding is provided through the “Special investment program for cycle mobility 4×4”.

However, it is not yet certain when the renovation will begin. According to the city’s press office, the final decision by the city parliament is still pending. A start is possible towards the end of this year.
