Geneva decentralizes food distribution

A last woman leaves Les Vernets pulling a heavy shopping cart. In his bags overflowing with food, there are, between the preserves and the layers, fresh bread, a gift from Geneva bakeries, and vegetables grown by local market gardeners. In the entrance hall of the Vernets ice rink, last Saturday, shortly after 1 p.m., only the volunteers remain, divided between joy, fatigue and the resentment that this extraordinary experience ends. Images of the poor queuing for a few bags of food have been around the world. In six distributions, each Saturday since May 2, 15,967 parcels were distributed, i.e. 207 tonnes of food and hygiene products, thanks to the mobilization of the Solidarity Caravan, numerous associations, and coordination of the city of Geneva.
