During a pandemic, some couples should avoid kissing and even wear a mask during sex, Canada’s public health official Theresa Tam suggested on Wednesday.
“Sex can be complicated during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially for people who do not live with an intimate partner or whose sexual partner is at great risk of contracting the disease,” Dr Tam said in a statement. . “The least risky sexual activity while Covid-19 is rife is when you are alone,” she noted.
When having sex “with someone who is not in your household or social bubble”, partners should avoid kissing and ensure that their “faces are not touching or being near. one of the other”. In such a case, wearing a “mask covering the nose and mouth” is suggested. “The most important thing is to build a relationship of trust with your sexual partner,” she said.
130,000 cases in Canada
Dr Tam believes that people should also monitor their health for any symptoms of Covid-19 and limit their consumption of alcohol and “other substances” to “make wise decisions”. However, she stresses that the risk of transmission of the new coronavirus through semen or vaginal secretions “is very low”. Nonetheless, she advocates “safe sex practices, such as using condoms and sharing information” on sexually transmitted diseases.
Canada recorded nearly 130,000 cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, 9,121 of which were fatal. Almost 90% of those who contracted it were recovered.
