Gel spray: The ingredient could inactivate SARS-CoV-2 on the skin

Fend off annoying gels – and thus fight the novel coronavirus at the same time? This could actually be possible, as initial scientific findings on Great Britain now suggest.

Defense Science and Technology Laboratory, a research sub-agency of the UK Department of Defense, has exclusive reports from the broadcaster Sky according to tests with the ingredient citriodiol – which is usually added to insect sprays – and found indications of a corresponding effect against the pandemic pathogen.

As early as April, the broadcaster reported that the UK military had been provided with an insect repellent in stock to test its effect on SARS-CoV-2. It is known from previous studies that citriodiol can kill other types of coronaviruses on surfaces or on human skin that are more harmless to humans.

Defense Ministry researchers conducted a parallel study to determine whether the findings could be transferred to the new pathogen.

It has now become known that when applied superficially, citriodiol could at least partially inactivate the novel coronavirus.
