Geez, Chip Scarcity Is Predicted To Continue Until 2022

JAKARTA – Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) chipmaker which makes processors for Apple, Qualcomm, AMD and many other major consumer technology companies warned that chip shortages could persist into 2022.

“We see that demand continues to be high,” said TSMC CEO CC Wei to The Verge, Saturday (17/4).

“By 2023, we hope to offer more capacity to support our customers. At that time, we will start to see the tightness of the supply chain, “he continued.

Wei’s comments reflect a prediction made by new Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger earlier this week, who warned that it could take several years to address global chip shortages.

Likewise Nvidia CFO Colette Kress who recently said that graphics card manufacturers expect demand to continue to outpace supply this year.

The global chip shortage has impacted all industries from car makers to game console manufacturers.

TSMC said that especially for car chips, the supply of chips will increase in the next quarter.

Nonetheless, TSMC, Intel and Nvidia point out that overall chip shortages on a massive and broader scale are unlikely to abate any time soon.
